BERCHMANS ERUDITE LECTURE SERIES (BELS)

Topic

What Can We Do with a Quantum Liquid?

Time: 7 PM (IST), Wednesday, 28, October 2020.

Sir Anthony James Leggett

(Nobel Laureate in Physics 2003)

Sir Anthony James Leggett Leggett is a theoretical physicist and professor emeritus at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is widely recognized as a world leader in the theory of low-temperature physics, and his pioneering work on super fluidity was recognized by the 2003 Nobel Prize in Physics.

He has shaped the theoretical understanding of normal and superfluid helium liquids and strongly coupled super fluids. He set directions for research in the quantum physics of macroscopic dissipative systems and use of condensed systems to test the foundations of quantum mechanics.

BELS was instituted in 2012 by the faculty of the college from their own contributions to mark the 90th year (Navathy) celebration of the college. BELS aims to invite scholars of repute in various disciplines, preferably Nobel Laureates to the campus for lectures and interactions with the faculty, students (college and school) and selected members of the public. Previous Speakers include Prof Ei-ichi Negishi (Nobel Laureate in Chemistry 2010) and Prof Ada E Yonath, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, 2009).
